NEXT BESG TO BE HELD ON APRIL 26, 2008!

THIS WEBSITE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND WILL BE UDATED SOON! PLEASE CHECK BACK!

On Saturday, July 17th, 2004, and Saturday June 11th, 2005, the Johns Hopkins physics and astronomy department hosted 80-100 girls and adults for the first two "Big Explosions and Strong Gravity" events. Approximately twenty physics and astronomy PhDs as well as several Girl Scout volunteers were involved in putting on these two one-day events, which included astronomers from JHU, STScI and Goddard Space Flight Center.

These activities are made possible through NASA Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) funding which has been provided two years in a row by Chandra X-ray Center grants to Principal Investigator Dr. Ann Hornschemeier, who from 2002-2004 was a Chandra postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Hornschemeier recently joined NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a civil servant in the Laboratory for X-ray Astrophysics. Thus the BESG activity will CHANGE VENUES in 2006. Please stay tuned. We promise to maintain the high quality of the program.

The next event will occur on Saturday, June 10th, 2006 at a camp, university, or school south of Baltimore (likely nearby Goddard Space Flight Center). If you are a Girl Scout in the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland council, you will be able register. We expect to have final information about cost and location available by April.

We thank members of the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy for saving paper towel tubes in the months leading up to this event. We are grateful to the Masci Restaurant for donating scoops for the "Universe Trail Mix" activity (see photograph), to the JHU bookstore for donating white plastic bags for the attendees' materials, and to the Chandra X-ray Center for donating calendars and board games for prizes during the scavenger hunt and quiz. We thank Ann Field for her generous donation of graphics design time in making name tags and the schedule.

Please follow the links in the menu to the left to see pictures from the events or to read descriptions of the activities that the girls participated in.
